STAYING AT LA PALMERAIE BAHAMAS AND BRINGING FOOD FROM THE US
When you are staying at La Palmeraie Bahamas, you may wonder if you can find every type of food on Harbour Island. The answer is no, because the island offers only basic items and prices are much higher. Therefore, we always suggest bringing food from the US when possible, since it is allowed within certain limits. This preparation helps you enjoy better meals during your stay.
Yes, you can bring groceries into The Bahamas, but you must follow both value limits and food rules. Under the Customs exemption, travelers who are not Bahamian residents may bring personal goods worth up to US$100 duty-free. If you bring more than that, customs may charge duty and VAT on the extra amount. It is smart to keep your receipts so you can show the real value. Customs officers are often friendly, although extra flexibility is never guaranteed.
In general, The Bahamas allows most packaged and non-perishable foods for personal use, as long as you declare them. Dry goods, snacks, cereals, pasta, and canned items are usually fine. Frozen or vacuum-sealed meats in USDA-stamped packaging are also often accepted, although they may be inspected at the airport.
Fresh items require more care. Fresh fruits and vegetables legally need an import permit and a phytosanitary certificate. Without these papers, they are not allowed, although some travelers bring small amounts at their own risk. Fresh dairy is also sensitive, so it is safer to choose shelf-stable or hard cheeses instead.
By planning ahead, bringing food from the US within the allowed limits, and buying extra items on the island, you can enjoy excellent meals while still respecting Bahamian customs rules.
